Best Time to Visit Muir Woods
Time of day
The gates open at 8 am and the Visitor Center opens at the same time, closing 30 minutes before the monument does. The first hours are the quietest on the valley floor, and the half-day trip is sold as an early-morning visit for that reason. Julie, on that tour, described a peaceful morning in the forest. The café opens at 9 am and serves hot food from 11 am, so an 8 am start means breakfast beforehand. Parking and shuttle days
A parking reservation is required every day of the week, all year, and gives a 30-minute arrival window, so the time of arrival is chosen at booking. The shuttle from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal runs only on some days: Friday to Sunday and federal holidays from early spring through September, then Saturdays and Sundays in October. Outside those dates a visitor without a car arrives by tour, by ride-share with a return arranged in advance, or on foot. The shuttle page covers the reservation for both legs.
Season by season
Spring. The shuttle season starts in early spring, with weekend and holiday service through September. Outside the salmon season the Ben Johnson loop can return on its shorter summer route over the Dipsea footbridge.
Summer. Fog from the coast is common, and the redwoods draw moisture from it. The creek runs low and clear. The Dipsea Race, a trail race from Mill Valley over the ridge to Stinson Beach, crosses the canyon each June.
Autumn. The shuttle runs on weekends in October. Two national fee-free days fall in this part of 2026: 27 October, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday, and 11 November, Veterans Day. From 1 January 2026 they apply to citizens and residents of the United States only, and parking and shuttle reservations are still required and charged. The free entry days page has the detail.
Winter. Rain returns, trails get muddy and the Dipsea footbridge is removed, which makes the winter loop a mile longer. After the first heavy rains, coho salmon and steelhead trout spawn in Redwood Creek, roughly December to February. They are watched from the Main Trail footbridges, never from the water. Weather inside the canyon
The forest floor sits in shade under the canopy along Redwood Creek at the foot of Mount Tamalpais, so it stays cool even when San Francisco is warm, and fog can sit over the ridges on a summer afternoon. Layers help in every month. A day with fog in the canopy and a day of winter rain look different in photographs, and neither closes the monument, which opens on holidays too.
Tours and the calendar
None of the six tours publishes a fixed start time; the calendar in each booking widget lists the slots for the chosen date. All six carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which leaves room to move a booking if the forecast turns. The ferry-option tour runs the return by boat on one option.
A salmon-watching visit works on the flat Main Trail alone: the footbridges are the viewing points, so a tour’s 80 to 90 minutes in the forest is enough time.
